Lawrence Gelb, M.D. Professor of Medicine Office Location: Storz Building 4570 Children's Place Dr. Gelb received his M.D. degree from Harvard University. He completed his internal medicine training and fellowship in infectious diseases at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He served in the Public Health Service working in a virology laboratory at the NIH prior to joining the faculty in the Infectious Diseases Division in 1973. He is currently partially retired and working as an Attending in the Infectious Diseases outpatient clinic. Research Interests Dr. Gelb's research interests center around basic and clinical virology. He has been working with the varicella-zoster virus for over 25 years and did some of the early US work on the live-attenuated vaccine. He is currently finishing a nation-wide multicenter study investigating the potential of an increased potency varicella vaccine to prevent or ameliorate shingles in an older population. This study, which involved over 38,000 subjects, has been completed and the data are being analyzed. The results should be ready for publication this year.
