Margaret A. Olsen, Ph.D., M.P.H. Research Assistant Professor of Medicine Office Location: Washington University School of Medicine Dr. Olsen joined the Infectious Diseases Division in 2000. She received her Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Pennsylvania, and more recently obtained a master's degree in public health from Saint Louis University with concentrations in epidemiology and biostatistics. Dr. Olsen is a diplomat of the American Board of Medical Microbiology. Prior to joining the faculty of Washington University, she was on the faculty at Creighton University in the Department of Medical Microbiology, and later was adjunct faculty at Saint Louis University in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology. Research Interests My primary interests are the study of the epidemiology of hospital-acquired infections, particularly surgical site infections. I am interested in identifying risk factors for these infections after specific surgical procedures, such as cardiac surgery, spinal surgery, and breast cancer surgery, and in developing computerized methods of surveillance to determine the incidence of these infections. I am also very interested in determining the outcomes of surgical site infections from both the societal and patient perspective, including the economic costs and the impact on quality of life.
