Thomas H. Steinberg, M.D. Associate Professor of Medicine Office Location: 7105 McDonnell Pediatric Research Building Dr. Steinberg joined the ID division in 1989. He received his MD from New York University and did his internal medicine residency and ID fellowship at Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University. He subsequently did a research fellowship in the Department of Physiology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and was on the internal medicine faculty there before coming to Washington University. Research Interests My primary research training was as a macrophage cell biologist and I maintain an active interest in this field although the main focus of my lab has evolved to encompass several areas related to intercellular communication. One active area of research is cell-cell communication mediated by gap junction proteins, called connexins. I have been interested in understanding the properties of different connexins and the roles they play in integrating cell responses in different cell models, including macrophages, bone cells, and islet cells. A second area of research is the function of plasma membrane receptors for nucleotides, termed P2 receptors. Both of these areas of research come together in studies of how cells coordinate intercellular calcium signaling, mediated both by gap junction proteins and by P2 receptors.
